In a study published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, forty participants — 21 adults with metabolic syndrome and 19 healthy adults — ate gummies containing green tea extract, which is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds called catechins, for 28 days.

The daily dose was equal to five cups of green tea. In the randomized, double-blind, cross-over study, all participants spent an additional 28 days on placebo, with a one-month break from any supplementation between experiments.

The researchers confirmed that the participants, as recommended, were on a diet low in polyphenols—natural antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, teas, and spices—during the placebo and green tea extract phases of the study, so any results can be interpreted in terms of effects. only green tea.

The results showed that fasting blood glucose levels in all participants were significantly lower after taking green tea extract compared to levels after taking placebo.

Using an anti-inflammatory protein test in the feces, all participants were found to have reduced gut inflammation due to green tea treatment.

Using a method to assess the sugar ratio in urine samples, the researchers also found that the participants’ small intestine permeability decreased significantly when they consumed green tea.
