Astronomers have discovered a potentially dangerous large asteroid

An international team of astronomers has discovered three near-Earth asteroids as part of the NOIRLab program. The orbit of the largest of them intersects with the earth, so it is potentially dangerous for the planet. The results of the study are published in The Astronomical Journal.

It is noted that the asteroids were detected by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), located on the telescope. Victor Blanco at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory.

Scientists stressed that the objects are in orbit between Earth and Venus. Specialists have only two 10-minute “windows” per day to make observations, but even during these short periods they are hindered by strong background lighting in the sky.

Two relatively small asteroids have been named 2021 LJ4 and 2021 PH27. They do not pose a threat to the planet. Of these, only PH27 is of scientific interest – it is the closest asteroid to the Sun.

The third celestial body, called 2022 AP7, reaches a width of 1.5 km. Its orbit intersects with the Earth, so it can be dangerous for the Earth, astronomers explained.
