Deputy Zhurova said that Russian athletes may not get to the 2024 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that sports federations prevent Russians from participating in competitions. The inability to compete in various championships is not so critical, but athletes may also be excluded from qualifying competitions, which will close the path to the 2024 Olympics. The deputy said about this obstacle in a conversation with Lenta.ru State Duma Svetlana Zhurova.
“The IOC recommended that the federations not allow the Russians. And almost all of them listened to this, except for the tennis federation – they give athletes access under a neutral flag. Others are not yet ready to go for it, although the IOC document is advisory. As a result, federation after federation is now denying Russians even the selection for the Olympic Games, ”said the deputy.
The politician stressed: the inability to participate in the championships and world cups, although unpleasant, is not fundamental – they can be missed. But the non-admission to the selection for the Olympic Games in many cases is critical.
“Volleyball has not allowed the Russians to the qualifying games, they cannot get licenses. And here’s the point: if in 2023 all events are on Ukraine run out and they will start admitting us, athletes may no longer pass the selection and not get into the competition, because qualifications begin to be held in advance. Athletes and other individual athletes can get admission a few months before the Olympics, but with group sports, everything is different, ”explained Zhurova.
Male and female Russian national teams volleyball will miss qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This was reported on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The qualifying tournament will be held from September 30 to October 8, 2023. Teams ranked 1-26 in the ranking of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) will be admitted to it, except for national teams France and Russia.
