After the chancellor gets acquainted with the turbine, German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock will make her first visit to Canada. On August 3, she will travel to Montreal, where the turbine was serviced in the province of Quebec.

The war in Ukraine and the situation with the turbine:

On June 20, 2022, Russia announced that it was ready to supply gas through Nord Stream in full, but for this Europe must return overhauled turbines.

On July 8, Moscow announced that it would increase gas supplies to Europe if the turbine was returned.

On July 9, 2022, information appeared that Canada had agreed with Germany on turbine return Siemens for Nord Stream.

On July 9, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said that Canada would make an exception to the sanctions imposed against Russia and return to Germany a turbine that is needed to service the Nord Stream gas pipeline and is currently undergoing maintenance at a Canadian facility owned by Siemens.

It was planned that the turbine would first be sent to Germany and then delivered to Gazprom. In Germany, it was believed that the return of the turbine would deprive Russia of a reason to maintain deliveries well below normal levels.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy made a joint statement in connection with the decision of the Canadian government to issue a permit for the return of the repaired Nord Stream 1 turbine to Germany. As noted in the statement, “this dangerous precedent goes against the rule of law and will have only one consequence – to strengthen Moscow’s sense of impunity.”

The US State Department supported Canada’s decision to return the turbine for Nord Stream. They believe that thanks to this, Germany and other European countries will be able to replenish their gas reserves, which will increase their energy security and resilience, and will allow them to resist Russia’s use of energy as a weapon.

On July 10, 2022, Canada adopted fateful decision regarding Nord Stream.

On July 13, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba stated that he considers the decision of Canada to be erroneous transfer turbine to Germany for Nord Stream, but he does not see “zrada” in this.

On July 16, 2022, Gazprom requested documents for export from Canada turbines for Nord Stream.

On July 25, 2022, the Russian monopoly Gazprom announced that for technical reasons shut down another Siemens turbine.

On July 29, 2022, Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprom, accused Siemens of having allegedly eliminated no more than a quarter identified faults on the turbines of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.
