Italy may turn off fountains and ban car washing

In the near future, the Italian government will announce the introduction of a state of emergency due to drought in the central and northern regions of the country, the national media reported on June 23.

As the debate continues, politicians and experts from the affected regions are putting forward a range of private proposals, from turning off fountains to banning car washes.

As reported
previously, the problem affected mainly the northern regions of Italy: the water level in the Po River decreased by three meters, the bottom was bare in places, in Lake Maggiore the water level dropped by a meter in three days. Farmers and local authorities are asking the country’s government for early support. The damage to the country’s agriculture alone is estimated at several billion euros. Experts believe that up to a third of the crop will be lost for certain species.
