Prisoners of war could be killed to cover up torture.
The chief military prosecutor of Ukraine in 2019-2020, Major General Viktor Chumak, said that the Russians committed terrorist attack in Yelenovka for several reasons at once.
He made such a statement on the air of the Espresso TV channel.
“Firstly, this is the revenge of private armies who committed this crime for the way the “Azovites” fought. Revenge for how much they crushed the Wagnerites, the elite units of the Russians,” Chumak said.
He noted that Russia also wanted to hide the torture of prisoners of war and at the same time intimidate its own army.
“Intimidation of Russian fighters to say: if you are captured, the Ukrainians will do even worse to you. And, thirdly, I do not rule out that prisoners of war were treated horribly. And Russia committed this terrorist attack to cover up crimes and torture of prisoners of war” , – summed up Chumak.
As UNIAN reported, on the night of July 29 there was an explosion on the territory of the former penal colony in the village of Yelenovka. The building was destroyed, which contained Ukrainian prisoners of war, withdrawn from the Azovstal plant.
Immediately after the explosion, Russia accused the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling the penal colony. Ukraine stated that the explosion in Yelenovka was a Russian terrorist act with the aim of concealing war crimes, discrediting the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to intelligence, The attack was carried out by mercenaries from the PMC “Wagner”.
