Cabinet predicts: Ukraine’s EU membership may take seven years – news from Ukraine, Politics

Ukraine’s full accession to the European Union may take seven years, this is a positive scenario, because it is necessary to implement a large array of EU legislation. This was stated on the air of the national telethon by the general director of the government office for coordinating European integration Natalia Forsyuk.

She sees no obstacles for Ukraine’s membership in the EU, but explained that the procedure will be lengthy, in particular, it is necessary to complete recommendations from the conclusion of the European Commission. According to her, according to all the conditions, Ukraine has progress – they must be fulfilled, and not start something anew.

After that, the EU countries should support the opening of negotiations with Ukraine (according to Forsyuk, this may happen in early 2023), and Kyiv should implement the EU legislation, which is also a lengthy procedure.

“I think that there is no (chance to join the EU in 2023, – ed.). This is impossible procedurally, not because Ukraine will not be able to cope… According to the analysis, seven years is very good. I think that it is necessary to proceed from this … Before this time, it is very unlikely because of the huge amount of legislation that we need to not only adopt, but also implement in our daily life. That is, we must fully live according to the laws of Europe – economically, politically, judicially. It can’t happen in a year,” she explained.

She also noted that EU candidate status – this is not a promise, but a legal consolidation of the European future, with the implementation of bureaucratic procedures, Ukraine will become a full-fledged member of the European Union.

In addition, Forsyuk noted that the status gives access to EU structural funds – financial instruments that are available only to candidate countries. According to her, these are not only loans, but also assistance on more favorable terms.
