Russia and Iraq are preparing for signing a memorandum of cooperation in the field of non-energy and peaceful applications of nuclear technologies. Ilya Lobov, economic adviser of the Russian embassy in Iraq, announced this.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, he also addedthat the parties are discussing and interaction in the field of education. We are talking about the admission of Iraqi students to Russian universities.

According to Lobov, Iraq traditionally shows interest in Russia’s nuclear power industry. Within the framework of the agreement on cooperation in the use of atomic energy, signed in 1975, the parties resumed negotiations on establishing partnership in this area.

“Rosatom and the Iraqi Agency for the Control of Radioactive Materials are considering the possibility of implementing small projects in the field of creating low-power research reactors, as well as non-power applications of nuclear technologies in medicine, agriculture and desalination,” Lobov explained.

On the interest of Iraq to develop relations with Russia in various fields previously indicated by the Ambassador of the Republic in the Russian Federation. According to him, Baghdad seeks to develop cooperation in the oil industry, as well as in the industrial and commercial spheres, in the field of healthcare.
